Guest Author, Elissa Daye!

Interview with Author Elissa Daye

GRACEN: You're a new author, just starting out. What inspires you to write?

ELISSA: That’s a tricky question actually, because it has two parts to it. The first part is why did I want to be a writer. I was an avid reader from the moment I could read my first words. I read everything I could get my hands on. In third grade I remember getting a notebook as a prize from a teacher and I started writing poetry where every line had to rhyme. Something like “The little kitten lay, fast asleep in the hay.” The other reason I started writing was that it was an escape from life. Reading and writing got me through some very difficult times growing up. There is nothing like getting lost in another world to avoid the one you live in. In many ways I want to provide that outlet for others.

As far as what inspires me to write my stories, it’s different all the time. Sometimes it’s a certain feeling I get that there is something inside just itching to come out. A lot of ideas pop in my head right as I am working on another project. In the past these ideas have distracted me from finishing whatever writing I was working on at the time. Now I just write down the general idea and promise to come back to it when I can devote adequate time to it.  Here lately it’s the inspiration of fellow writers that gets me moving. Seeing that others believe in you and have walked the path before you really helps when you are just starting out. Having people who appreciate what I write and give me feedback has been so helpful since I’ve been terrified to share my work with others. You know how it is, we’re always our worst critic and we sometimes expect others to treat our work as critically as we treat it.

GRACEN: You have a young family. How do you juggle writing while doing all the homelife things you need to get done, too?

ELISSA: Actually so far it has been easier than I thought it would be. My daughter is about 23 months old right now and she is extremely active, so it has been a challenge. I take advantage of naptime. She gets a good two hours of sleep in the afternoon which is a good chunk of time. I sometimes put cleaning on the backburner and make meals that last a couple of nights so I have more time to focus on other things. My husband has been very helpful too, especially when I need to take a break from life to write. I have left the house with the laptop or camped out in the bedroom away from family life for a few hours at a time. Weekends have become my friend as I let daddy take over caring for baby. It gives me time to work on things or take a break while he gets to bond with our daughter. The biggest chunk of time that I have is when my child goes to bed for the night. When everyone else is asleep I finally get the quiet time that I need to focus on writing. My house may not be as picture perfect as people expect, never clean enough to pass the white glove test, but it’s enough for us to function and certainly a lot cleaner than it was when we were both working desk jobs. Sometimes we sacrifice for our craft. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

GRACEN: Do you work outside of the home? If so, what kind of work do you do and do you incorporate your work life into your writing?

ELISSA: I used to work outside the home before I had my child. I’ve taught middle school and elementary school, so I think in the future when I write children’s novels I will pull greatly from that experience. I will be kind to the teachers when I write my books, because we often read about the evil, nasty teachers and never hear about the ones that put their heart and soul into the classroom. I also worked a desk job, so I guess it is easy to say that I could incorporate the daily frustrations of dealing with people and working in a small cubicle that sucks the life out of you. Currently, I am a stay at home mom, and am thoroughly enjoying raising my daughter. It allows me to watch her grow and encourages me to be the best role model I can for her. Someday I know she will be proud of me for pursuing my own dreams. I hope to encourage her to do the same.

GRACEN: When did you start writing either creatively? What were some of the early writings that you did? Would you ever use any of them now?

ELISSA: I think I sort of answered this on a previous question. I have been writing for a very long time. I have never written professionally before though. When I was a child, I loved reading and escaping into other worlds. My favorite books when I was a child were written by C.S. Lewis, Judy Blume, and Jean Craighead George. I very much wanted to live on my own and survive in the forest. When I was in third grade I wrote a fanfiction story for Highlights Magazine, but it was never published. The title was Superfudge Junior, and you can probably guess it was all about Farley Drexel Junior and how he was very much like his father as a child. I did not understand copyright infringement at the time, which is why I think they never responded to my inquiry.  From there I continued to write more poetry. I remember when my mom attended a parent teacher conference for 8th grade. My English teacher told her how impressed she was with my writing and told her that I wrote like a 20 year old. It was the best compliment I had ever received at the time and it made me want to do even better.

When I entered high school I started writing short stories, mostly for school assignments. By the time I was a junior in high school, my English teacher encouraged me to enter for a chance to attend the Illinois Summer School for the Arts. At that point in time I had already been writing longer short stories, one of them being a ghost story, which I entered as an example of my writing. I won a scholarship to attend the two week summer camp and had the time of my life. I decided from then on that I wanted to be a writer. The funny thing is that I had such a logical head on my shoulders and decided since writing was not a guarantee that I had to have a profession to fall back on.  So I attended Illinois State University and got a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. I became a teacher, who put everything I had into my work and had very little left over to work on the book that I had started when I was in college. When I was finally able to quit teaching, my writing became my focus again.

GRACEN: What else would you be doing if you couldn't write, and why?

ELISSA: Well, I’ve already done it. I was a teacher. I loved teaching, but the dealing with administration and bureaucratic imbeciles that had never even spent a day in the classroom literally sucked the soul right out of my body. I would probably find a desk job if I could no longer write. Or just stay home and raise my children and let my husband take care of us. One day he says I will keep him in the manner to which he should be accustomed. Ha ha ha! Dare to dream I tell him.

GRACEN:  Who inspires you to write?

ELISSA: I think it is fair to say that the people I know and love inspire me every day to write, but every part of my past is a stepping stone to another story. It is true that writers suffer great melancholy, and I have had my fair share which I think allows me to put more emotion into my writing. I also think that everything I have gone through in this lifetime has inspired me to be who I am. I waited most of my life to get to the point where I believe in me and while having others like what I do is nice, I have to be the one to inspire and motivate myself to continue. There was nothing like finishing the first book, being proud of myself, and knowing that I could repeat the process anytime I wanted. From there, I have only continued to grow my world in my books and my personal life.

GRACEN: Have you always wanted to write paranormal romance novels?

ELISSA: Actually, until recently I didn’t know it was possible to write them. I have just learned that the box I was writing myself into no longer exists. People are ready for almost anything you can dream up these days, which opens my writing up to whole new worlds that I had never thought to explore. I have been reading romance novels for most of my young adult/adult life. I liked to escape from my world and live in someone else’s for awhile and I liked the idea that most romance novels gave you a happily ever after.

GRACEN: Tell us about In Flames.

ELISSA: In Flames was not the first book I have finished, but it was the first that I wanted to share with the world. I loved the romance between Lysandra and Aiden. It’s not an easy romance. Nothing about their situation is easy. Lysandra has been torn away from everything she knew way before she could ever understand who she was or who she was meant to be. Aiden knows who he is, he has already lived through some of the darkness that is new to Lysandra. They both have their road blocks that keep them from seeing the overall picture. They are destined to be together, destined to fall in love, and destined to change their world together forever. Their love ignites the pages, so be prepared, for this story is not your typical handholding romance novel.

EXCERPT of IN FLAMES:

Chapter 1
Outlands 1342
The Outlands was a favored stopping place for the soldiers of Blackwolf Keep. It was a
village filled with wanton women who had decided to live away from the rest of the world. The
soldiers were always eager to slake their lust within its walls. The wars that waged across the
countryside had almost diminished, making their visits to their favorite stopping point few and
far between but always treasured. When they arrived within the wooden gates, the women of the
village rushed toward their horses with their buxom chests and swaying hips. Everyone knew
that the night would be filled with sounds of passion.
Lord Aesov walked into the middle of town like he owned the place. After days of conquest
he was more than ready to find a warm body to relieve the tension from his aching body. The
Outlands was certainly the place for that. He had taken his pleasure with most of the women in
the village and today would certainly be no different. The women were lounging all around him,
but none of his usual conquests would quench his thirst today. That was until he spotted Bridget
from across the camp. Something about her distracted him from the swarm of beauties before
him. Perhaps it was the fiery hair that fought to escape from its ties, the way her chin jutted out
in defiance as he perused her body, or maybe even the way she tried to ward off the blush that
crept up her face. He had never seen her in the Outlands before. He would certainly have
remembered her. When he dismounted, he walked over to where the quiet woman stood. When
he reached out to take her hand, she pulled it away. He bowed low to her and let his eyes meet
hers slowly. “I’m Lord Aesov, leader of Blackwolf Keep. I am humbled by your beauty, my
lady.”
“Humbled my arse,” she chided him.
“I’ve never seen you before. Are you new to Outlands?”
“What you mean to say is you’ve never ridden me before. I’m not a doxy and I do not tussle
for the mere sport of it, my lord.” She lowered her blue eyes away from his and turned away
from him.
“Aye. I can see that.”
From that moment on, Aesov made it a goal to stop in the Outlands as often as he could and
a slow courtship began. He had never been turned down before and his ego made him feel like a
stuffed porcupine; his prickles were always up whenever she was around. It took time and
perseverance on his part, not to mention spending time away from his husbandly duties at
Blackwolf Keep. His wife, Lilyana, had known better than to keep him on a tight leash. While it
would have been objectionable to most women, the riches she enjoyed made turning her back on
his dalliances easier to do.
When Bridget finally caved in to his demands, Aesov could not get enough of her. He had
stayed with her for weeks at a time hoping that soon his desire for her would be quenched. He
knew she was becoming attached to him, so he planned on breaking it off as soon as he had his
fill of her.
Aesov ran his warm hands all over the beautiful body before him, his desire for her so
unworldly he thought he would explode. She had been rather difficult to seduce away from her
naive notions that love was the only thing that separated them from the wild animals of the
forest. It had been hard to trick her, to make her believe that her feelings were returned, but
Aesov had been persistent. He would never settle down with the fiery redhead, not the way she

Guest Blogger Caitlin Ricci

Hey, I'm Caitlin Ricci. Thank you for spending some time with me today. I’d like to talk about my upcoming book, Taming the Lion Tamer which is available on August 18 through Silver Publishing.
The idea for Taming the Lion Tamer came to me one afternoon while driving east along I-70 on the Colorado plains. There’s a billboard next to the highway advertising a wild animal sanctuary about an hour east of Denver. I went on their website, looked at the stories of some of their big cats, and started thinking about the kind of man that would devote his life to saving big cats. He would have to be compassionate, a real animal lover, and brave to be able to spend time with animals so much more powerful than himself. As someone getting to be around these majestic animals daily, he’d have one of the dream jobs as far as I’m concerned. But he wouldn’t think of it like that. The man that I pictured in my mind months ago would be humble and appreciate that he got the chance to work with endangered cats and help them in whatever way he could.
And then Quinn Fitzgerald was born and I liked him instantly. I knew he would be a great guy for this story. I enjoy characters that are sexy without trying, love their careers and stand for something. Quinn is all of these and more. And then there’s Charlie Deagman. He’s cute, shy and is amazed that someone as attractive as Quinn has any interest in him at all.
This was a fun story to write because these characters played well off of each other for me and there are some parts that really made me smile. It’s a cute story with a definite Happily Ever After and a pair of guys that I hope you’ll fall in love with as well.

My Email: authorcaitlinricci@gmail.com

Please enjoy my interview with Quinn Fitzgerald

Me: Today I have Quinn Fitzgerald sitting with me. He owns the Amherst Big Cat Sanctuary in Wyoming. Thank you for joining me today Quinn.
Quinn: My pleasure Caitlin.
Me: So, tell me what it’s like working with all those big cats.
Quinn: It’s by far the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. I enjoy every minute of my usually crazy busy day.
Me: What do you normally do at the sanctuary?
Quinn: I’d like to say that I spend the day on my back sunning myself like the African lions, or swimming like the Bengal tigers. But sadly more often than not I’m stuck in the office doing paperwork and paying bills. I do get out and help as much as I can though. I’m far more a hands on type of guy than the kind of boss that just sits back and lets everything happen around him.
Me: Then does your team handle the rest of the daily stuff?
Quinn: Yes. I’m fortunate to have a great team working with me. We all keep the cats as our first priority so there’s that understanding between us that if something isn’t in the best interest of the cats, no one should be doing it.
Me: Aside from taking care of the cats, what else do you enjoy doing?
Quinn: I enjoy seeing movies, though usually I just rent them and watch whatever I can in the evenings. I’ve got a great collection of classic horror movies and I’ve seen each about a dozen times. But my absolute favorite thing outside of the cats is frosting.
Me: Frosting?
Quinn: Yes, especially cream cheese frosting. It’s my favorite.
Me: What do you like to have it on?
Quinn: A spoon.
Me: Anyone you like to share the frosting with?
Quinn: Maybe someday. But there hasn’t been anyone more than just a casual partner  for months. Want to have some frosting? I’ve got some in my bag. I try not to leave home without it. Never know when a craving will hit.
Me: No thanks.
Quinn: You don’t know what you’re missing.
Me: I’ll take your word for it. But unfortunately that’s all we have time for. Thank you for joining me today as I interviewed Quinn Fitzgerald. You can find out more about him in my new book, Taming the Lion Tamer, available August 18th on Silver Publishing.

Excerpt from Taming the Lion Tamer

Quinn parked the large van along the backside of the animation studio. This spot was normally reserved for loading, but he'd understood why the department head had asked him not to bring Aseem through the front lobby. It wasn't easy to control a young hundred pound Asiatic lion in such a large space, especially if someone happened to get nervous around him. The man that had invited them today, Mr Barker, had assured Quinn the people he was bringing in to meet Aseem had all been briefed about how to act in the lion's presence. Still, Quinn wasn't taking chances. He'd seen the news stories of what happened to a big cat once it got hold of a human and he wasn't going to let that happen to his best friend.
He hopped out of the van, making sure to grab the visitor badge he'd been sent as soon as he'd agreed to bring a lion to the studio. Aseem was a pro at this. The big cat actually seemed to enjoy the human attention when they did talks at the sanctuary. Quinn supposed that was probably a result of spoiling him as a cub. In those first few months, Aseem had barely left his side, acting more like a playful puppy than the fierce predator he was supposed to be. Quinn opened up the back doors and grinned at Aseem who blinked wearily at him.
"I know, big guy, it was a long drive down to Denver, wasn't it?" he said as he undid the padlock and opened the heavy metal cage that had been built in the back of the van. "You ready to go put on a little show?" Aseem yawned, his large canines flashing perfectly white in the summer sun. Instead of being nervous about being so close to the big cat, Quinn merely complimented himself on taking such good care of the animal's oral hygiene. He put on his leather work gloves and unhooked the heavy chain leash from where it attached to the cage. He stepped back out of the way and gave Aseem a little click with his tongue. The lion huffed, but lumbered to his feet after a few more clicks. "Come on, old buddy, I'm not a morning person, either, and I still managed to drag my ass out of bed at five. You could bother to jump down out of the van. Please."
The old van creaked as Aseem managed the short leap to the pavement. "Good, thank you. It's a great cause and the director has promised us lots of goodies, so let’s go do our best," Quinn said. He stifled a yawn and then closed the back doors with a slam that echoed through the empty back parking lot.

Thanks for hanging out with me and reading about Quinn and Charlie! You can check out excerpts, find the pictures that really helped round out these characters and read more about all of my stories at my blog.

My Bio
Caitlin was fortunate growing up to be surrounded by family and teachers that encouraged her love of reading. She has always been a voracious reader and that love of the written word easily morphed into a passion for writing. If she isn't writing, she can usually be found studying as she works toward her counseling degree. She comes from a military family and the men and women of the armed forces are close to her heart. She also enjoys gardening and horseback riding in the Colorado Rockies where she calls home with her wonderful fiance, their dog and Blue Tongue Skink. Her belief that there is no one true path to happily ever after runs deeply through all of her stories.

From August 5-18th, Winters and Kinrade are giving away two sets of each of their paranormal romance series (all signed) to two lucky winners. The Grand Prize winner will also receive a Gift Certificate for Amazon.com to cover the cost of a Kindle Fire (but we won't tell if you just want to buy $200 worth of books instead!)

Join us in celebrating the launch of the newest in Zoe Winters's Preternatural Series, Life Cycle (how much do we love love love Tamara and Cain? So freaking much!) which now includes one novella compilation and three novels. Life Cycle is book 4 in the Preternaturals series. However, new readers can read this installment first with no problems. Most of the books work as stand alones, and each book focuses on a different couple. The main theme of the Preternaturals is: “Everybody is the hero of their own story.” Some characters start out villains and become heroes. Some are heroes and turn into villains. Some are heroes to some characters and villains to others.

The series world has multiple dimensions, heaven, hell (which is earth), demon dimensions, and others. Magic, reincarnation, witches, vampires, demons, werecreatures of all sorts (called therians), gods, and angels all play an important role in the Pretverse.

It’s a world where blood is magic, authority is questioned, and soul mates always find each other, no matter how many incarnations it takes.

The Preternaturals contains a blend of snarky humor and angst that fans of the series have come to expect and enjoy.

Dark Mind Book Tours Gianna Perada

Please welcome Author Gianna Perada onto the Road to Hell. Gianna is the author of Blood Life. A second book, Devendra, is in progress and slated for release later this year.

Now, it’s time to create a little hell and get to the good stuff by revealing all of Gianna’s wicked secrets while on the Road to Hell. LOL Yeah, you wish! ;-D

Grab your favorite drink, sink your teeth into something decadent, sit back, relax and enjoy getting to know Gianna Perada…

(click photo to be taken to Dark Mind Book Tours)

GRACEN:  Tell me three things about yourself that we cannot find on the internet or in your bio?

Gianna: I’m a coffee snob, a food snob, and completely wild at heart.

GRACEN: What hobbies and interests do you participate in when you’re not writing?

Gianna: Exercising, reading, cooking (vegan/vegetarian), learning new things, making trouble, and speaking my mind (whether people like it or not).

GRACEN: Do you have any writing quirks or certain things you MUST have or do before beginning the writing process?

Gianna: Nag champa incense! It puts me in that mystical mood. And good music like Conjure One.  I’m really addicted to them right now. Perfect writing music. Perfect everything music, actually.

GRACEN: If you were plotting to take over the world, how would you do it?

Gianna: With a silver goddess candle and some sage. Those were the first things to come to mind. Not sure exactly what I’d do with them, but I’ll go with it.  haha

GRACEN: If you could make one statement that the entire planet would hear and remember, what would it be?

Gianna: I just saw this the other day and loved it: “I am a woman. I am not a princess. I have emotions, opinions, a temper, a VERY loud voice, and one HELL of a right hook.”  ;-)

GRACEN: What genre do you write and why that genre?

Gianna: I write horror because I love it! I adore everything scary and paranormal and edgy and gritty.

GRACEN: For those who are not yet familiar with Gianna Perada, can you please give us some details about the book and/or series?

Gianna: My debut novel, Blood Life, is a vampire and witch story of love, fate, redemption, chaos, and heartbreak. My vampires are predators. Humans are killed to sustain them, but the main story centers around the relationships of the witches, the vampires, and the combination of the two: The Combined.

GRACEN:  Do you have any new stories in the works and can you tell us a bit about it/them?

Gianna: A second book is underway currently, and I hope to have it ready for release around Halloween.  It is actually a prequel.  When I finished writing Blood Life, one of the characters demanded I tell her story, and I really had to go backwards to do that. There is also a sequel planned for sometime mid-2013.

GRACEN: If you could describe your writing with one word or brief phrase, what would it be? Please delve into the core of your writing to tell us what word or phrase you want readers to take with them when they’ve finished reading your story.

Gianna: Daring. Impressionable. Intriguing.  Something that really made them think and got under their skin.

GRACEN: What, in your opinion, makes your story unique and what makes it stand out from other stories in your genre? Think of this as a pitch to convince readers to pick up your books.
Gianna: I feel the fact that my vampires and witches combine to form a race sets it apart from the rest. Also that I’m bringing them back around as the PREDATOR and not just the alluring lovable immortal creature. I also wasn’t afraid to let it get really dark at times, almost uncomfortable for some.  I’m okay with that.

GRACEN: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?

Gianna: So far nothing! But plans for future books dictate that I will be going there very soon. I’ll keep you posted for future tours so you can ask me this question again.  hehe

GRACEN: Of all your books, which character did you have the most fun creating and why?

Gianna:  By far, my favorite is my inner witch and most demanding muse, Devendra.  She is such a huge part of me and has been since I can remember.  She has so many layers and has been with me through so many things that she’s become sort of a best friend of all the characters.

GRACEN: If you had the opportunity to meet just one of your characters in real life, who would it be and why?

Gianna: Devendra.  Same reasons as above.  She’s the bomb. Really.

GRACEN: Which of your characters would you never want to meet under any circumstance and why?

Gianna: Lorien. She’s a bitch and a hater. One of the types of girls you want to strangle for every reason in the book.  Yeah, that’s her.  You’ll get to know her much better in the third book, but you do get a taste of her in Blood Life.

GRACEN:  If you were interviewing yourself, what is the one question you would ask yourself and please give us the answer to that question?

Gianna: Name five things that have the ability to cheer you up when you’re feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders.

1)     Horseback riding bareback through the woods
2)    Scary movies with good company that gets just as excited watching them as I do
3)    Begin swept off my feet for no reason at all by a man of my dreams
4)    A long string of good luck without bad sneaking in and effing everything up
5)    Writing to my heart’s content without worry… forever

GRACEN:  Thanks so much for joining us, Gianna!  It’s been a treat getting to know you better!

EXCERPT:

First time every posted online—hot sex scene between Roman and Alexandria (who was a virgin):

The cottage doors squeaked open as though fighting not to fall off their hinges. Floorboards bowed in response to each of Roman’s steps as he carried Alexandria over to his cot. He delicately laid her beneath him, careful not to crush her. She closed her eyes, enjoying the sensation of his weight pinning her down to the mattress.
Gently, Roman moved his hands down between her legs, rubbing and cupping her privates with his palm. She moaned as excitement crept over her. He pressed himself between her tense legs, lightly pushing at her thigh with his erection. Her garments trembled, waiting to slip off.
Concentrating on the passion of each button undone, Roman shed the first layer: her ruffled blouse. Alexandria opened her eyes, looking up into Roman’s flushed face. Hesitantly, unsure of what to do, she assisted him. Slowly relinquishing each chaste, protected layer, they breathed chants into each other’s ears.
Roman cradled her against his chest as he separated her. She writhed, yowling as her hymen burst, trickling blood down her inner thighs. Roman, keeping a slow, ginger probing, wiped the wet hair from her clammy face. He whispered reassurances, removing himself from her warmth to ease the pain.
He moved down to where her hands clutched herself and gently lifted them free. Her soft down, matted with blood and her own juices, was swollen red and angry. He blew on her, then licked softly at the throbbing flesh. She groaned as confusing sensations flooded over her from tingling to aches. She reached down to his hair, pulling and forcing his mouth over her.
He slid his tongue inside of her. The sweetness of her juice mixed with the coppery taste of blood sent him into oblivion. Lust blossomed into mania; he wanted to tear her open whatever the cost. He needed her warmth. She rocked her hips spastically, a little embarrassed by her pleasure.
Roman looked up into her face, sweat-drenched and flushed, then crept on top of her again. She reached down and led him back inside of her like an expert, feeling the bulk of pain subside and pleasure wiggle its way in. Her limbs tensed as he kept a steady rock, bringing his sex in and out of her. An orgasm rushed through her. She moaned with pleasure, biting him on the shoulder.
He felt himself building; the moment was nearing where he would release his semen into her womb, praying not to create a baby, but to fill her with his essence. She groped his back, rocking with him, legs wrapped firmly, intertwining with his. She felt another orgasm surfacing, stronger than the last. Her moans grew louder, full of more madness. Roman reached his climax, exploding into her.
For Alexandria, the night spent together symbolized not only her permanent loss of virginity or virtue, but also a division from all that she had ever known: her Royal upbringing.
Undisturbed by losing something that never meant anything to her, she vowed herself to Roman.
