GRACEN: If you could pick one thing about our world to change, what would it be and why?

John: Sounds twee, but I’d like to get rid of all the bad people. As I get older, I’m less bothered about what used to annoy me as a teenager. I just want people to get along!

GRACEN: Kind of morbid, but if you knew the exact moment of your death, down to the last second, what changes would you make in your life?

John: I’ve experienced some moments that but for a lot of luck and some grace I think really could have been my last moments. I think I would try to worry less and smile more.

GRACEN: If I picked a television show or sitcom that fit my family, it would be the Addams Family because we’re all a bit odd and zany. What one television show/sitcom would best describe your family? Or if none apply, pick a song or album.

John: Haha I think they might just be the Mansons, whilst trying to convince the world they are the Waltons.

GRACEN: Pretend you’re writing a book about your life. What would the title be and why?

John: That’s such a great question. So good, I cannot come up with an answer right now!

GRACEN: What song title best describes your style of writing? (Use any song in existence or create your own).

John:  Taking Care of Business J

GRACEN: If you had superpowers would you be the superhero or the villain? Why? What would your name be?

John: Well my name on video game arcade machines was ‘Marmaliser’…so I suppose the villain. As to why, I think all actorss say they like play bad guys once in a while. I think I would agree with that.

GRACEN: Do you have a guilty pleasure? If so, will you share it with us?

John: I can share that with nobody!

GRACEN: You’re stranded on an island, who would you want to be stranded with and why?

John: Natalie Portman instantly springs to mind, but I think I might just prefer to be on my own. Peace is found from within, not necessarily in the company of others.

GRACEN: Now, let’s get to know you as an author. When did you become aware that you wanted to be a published author?

John: Honestly I just put some notes together for my first book, the non-fiction Essence of Martial Arts, and it was a student who recommended I stretch it out into a full book. As for fiction, I suppose it appeals to the part of me that likes to tell stories, in the hope that others will like what I write too.

GRACEN: Are there any particular authors that made an impact on you growing up or as an adult? Did any particular teacher or someone else in your life make an impact on your writing?

John: It was Stephen King as a teen and an adult that most impacted on me. At his best, his in another dimension to all other authors, and at his worst, his books are still compelling and well written. He’s just awesome.

GRACEN: Do you have any “must haves” while you’re writing—besides your computer, of course?

John: Tea, and more tea.

GRACEN: Do you write in a particular genre? If so, what’s the appeal of that genre for you?

John: I write whatever comes to mind. But I do like horror stories, and I suppose if you saw my collection of Fangoria magazines, you’d understand why.

GRACEN: Any love/hates as it relates to the writing industry?

John: Not particularly – I tend not to focus on the ‘hates’ as that could run and run. As for the ‘loves’, it’s great when people comment positively on what you have written.

GRACEN: Do you have a Muse? If yes, what’s his/her name(s). Why do you think some authors have a muse and other authors don’t?

John:  Not yet, but I might do for a future title. I think some authors try this just to escape from the shackles of their given name, and I don’t blame them for trying.

GRACEN: If you could live the life of any one of your characters, who would it be and why? Would you do things differently in real life than he/she did in the book?

John: As we create the characters, maybe we would make the same choices in real life. It would be hard to choose one….if I had to nail it down, I think Toril from Dark Winter is interesting because she is not a fully formed witch, and has much to learn, yet survive the story whilst doing so. Not wanting to reveal too much on Stormling at this point, I love Anadyr’s life….he’s a real hero, super-fearless, and yet has his vulnerabilities that make him what he is.

GRACEN: What are you working on now?

John: Editing and re-drafting Dark Winter 2, and a vampire novella called Murderous Little Darlings.

GRACEN: What makes your books stand out from other books in your genre? (Use this as an opportunity to sale folks on your book!)

John: I read a lot in the YA genre and an irk of mine is how one dimensional some of the characters are. I’ve attempted to write strongly written characters that can resonate with the reader. Put them in a clearly defined world, and I think you have a solid, very readable story.

GRACEN:  Thanks so much for joining us, John Hennessy!  It’s been a treat getting to know you better!

John Hennessy
John Hennessy is a young adult / new adult novelist whose works to date have been Dark Winter (published 2013), a paranormal horror thriller, and Stormling, an epic swords and magic (and cookies) fantasy. The first short story he ever wrote brought together Fagan, Lizzie Bennet, Sherlock Holmes and Dracula, which despite impressing his long suffering English teacher, thankfully remains unpublished. For recreation he will visit paranormal hotspots, but prefers to write about ghosts rather than meet them. He also believes almost any problem can be overcome so long as there is an inexhaustible supply of tea and biscuits. He has also written the non-fiction title The Essence of Martial Arts (published 2011), and released The Essence of Martial Arts: Special Edition, in 2014.
